The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method for Couples Therapy

Grounded in over 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, this method offers practical tools to strengthen relationships by improving communication, deepening emotional intimacy, and resolving conflict effectively. Whether couples are navigating everyday stressors or more significant challenges, the Gottman Method provides a clear, structured path to healing and growth.

What makes this method especially effective is its adaptability to different stages and stress points in a relationship. New parents may struggle with shifting roles, exhaustion, and lost intimacy. Couples dealing with infidelity or ongoing communication breakdowns often feel stuck in cycles of blame, distance, or emotional disconnection. High-performing couples, such as athletes, performers, or professionals often face unique pressures that impact connection and emotional availability.

The Gottman Method helps each couple identify their specific patterns and teaches evidence-based strategies to rebuild trust, express needs, and reconnect meaningfully.

At the heart of the Gottman Method is a belief that most relationships can not only survive, but flourish, with the right support. Couples learn to strengthen friendship, manage conflict without harm, and create a shared vision for the future. With a focus on emotional safety and mutual understanding, therapy becomes a space where both partners feel heard, validated, and empowered to grow individually and together.

Meet Your Therapist

As a couples therapist, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is witnessing couples heal, grow, and thrive together.

I draw on my professional training to help partners navigate challenges, strengthen their connection, and build healthier relationships. I’ve completed The Gottman Method training along with other couples therapy modalities like EFT and Psycohdynamic Therapy. I work with couples navigating a wide range of challenges, from communication struggles and emotional disconnection to infidelity and major life transitions.

Using an integrative approach, I meet couples with empathy, care, and understanding. I recognize how life’s complexities can strain even the strongest relationships, and I’m here to support your desire to restore connection, foster understanding, and create lasting, meaningful change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can we expect in the first few sessions?

The assessment spans four sessions. Session 1 is a joint initial meeting to understand relationship dynamics. Clients then complete a confidential online questionnaire (Gottman Relationship Checkup). Sessions 2-3 involve individual meetings covering oral history. By session 4, we’ll develop a plan tailored to your strengths, goals, and areas of growth.

Is the Gottman Method only for married couples?

No. The method works for any couple—regardless of marital status, age, gender, or sexual orientation. It applies whether partners are dating, engaged, cohabiting, married, or in long-term partnerships, offering tools to help improve communication, deepen connection, and strengthen your relationship.

Is the Gottman Method only for couples in distress?

Not exclusively. Many couples use it proactively to strengthen emotional bonds, deepen intimacy, build communication habits, and navigate life transitions. It’s effective both for healing and for enhancing a healthy relationship.

Can this method help us heal after an affair?

Yes. The approach includes a clear roadmap for rebuilding trust and intimacy after betrayal, supporting both partners through difficult emotions while creating new connection patterns.

What if one of us is unsure about therapy?

Initial hesitation is common. Therapy creates space where both feel respected, and ambivalence can be explored without pressure, supporting the relationship as a whole.

How long does therapy typically last?

Duration depends on goals and challenge complexity. Short-term work spans around 8-12 sessions, while others prefer longer support. The pace and duration are flexible and collaborative.

Does The Gottman Method work with virtual sessions?

Yes, the method suits both in-person and online sessions. Online therapy is just as effective and allows more flexibility in scheduling.
